Mahogany Veneer is interesting because there are so many different varieties and styles. In addition to Honduras (Genuine) and African (Khaya) species, there is Crotch, Plum Pudding, Silky Figured, and Ribbon Striped varieties. However, today I will be discussing the differences between Honduras and African, and Jatoba, a species that has the distinctive look of Mahogany with actually being one.
Mahogany is grown in several different continents, but mostly in Africa and South America. Honduran is often called "Genuine", and was previously the most popular type, being used to make high-class cabinetry for centuries. It was, in fact, one of the most desired woods in the world. Today, the African species has surpassed Genuine in popularity, and the latter is becoming increasingly rare, especially as a veneer product.

African Mahogany Veneer is also sold as Khaya- the names are interchangeable. Khaya tends to be a lighter color than Genuine, and is often salmon pink in hue. Khaya is less expensive and more readily available than Genuine. However, when stained darker, Khaya can be a fantastic alternative to Genuine.
Jatoba Veneer is also known as Brazilian Cherry, however it is not actually a cherry species. It actually looks like a cross between Khaya and Honduran species. Jatoba is often used in flooring, and can be found in many colors and grades. It is also a great choice for cabinets and furniture construction. Jatoba is grown in South America, but is relatively common in the United States.
Philippine Mahogany often gets mentioned along with African and Genuine, although it is not actually the same species either. The real name is Red Lauan or Dark Red Meranti. Although this species is popular is boat-building and flooring, it is most often not available as a veneer.
